Parent and Toddler Invite June 2014We have organised the next workshop for Parent and Toddler Groups on Saturday 21 June at Holy Trinity Church , Weston.

We will start with tea and coffee about 9.15 am and be finished by 11.30am. You can download the invite and share with the different volunteers in your group and also with any other groups that you think would like to join us. It would be great to expand the number who are linked in.

This time we will spend a bit of time planning the Teddy Bears picnics which we are hosting this summer as part of the city’s Jubilee celebrations. We look forward to introducing you to Hamwic and the book that shows his adventures in the city. We will also be sharing ideas about how to engage families in other church activities and spending time praying with and for one another.

We have been hearing lots of great stories about groups expanding and new groups starting up so think it is a real opportunity to learn from one another, get re-envisioned and take encouragement from each other.

Do let us know of any news from your group or any special things that you would like us to pray about.

City-wide Prayer Meetings 2014

City Prayer 2014

Prayer is at the heart of Love Southampton, so we are excited to give you the dates for three citywide prayer meetings in 2014. These are being organised jointly by Southampton Christian Network and Love Southampton.

With the opportunities and challenges facing our city and the church, we want more than ever to stand together as one body before God in worship and prayer, thanking Him for all He’s doing, seeking His face, and lifting up the name of Jesus.

The city prayer meetings will all be on Thursday evenings, 7.30-9pm and will be held at different locations across the city:

  • 3rd April – Holy Trinity Weston, Weston Lane, SO19 9HG
  • 3rd July – Destiny Centre, Saltmead, Kent Road, St Denys, SO17 2LJ
  • 6th November – St James Road Methodist Church, St James Road, Shirley, SO15 5HE
This prayer meeting will begin at 6.30pm with a chance to wander around displays from various Christian organisations in Southampton, before praying for their work in the city at 7.30pm as usual. PLEASE TRY TO ARRIVE EARLY.

Please put the dates in your diary and share them with your networks and churches. Updates and information can be found on Facebook.

We look forward to joining with you to humble ourselves and exalt God over our city in this year of Jubilee.

Homelessness and Housing Awareness and Prayer Evening

Increasing numbers of people in Southampton are facing challenges to do with homelessness and housing. Young people, families, single people, older people – all can be coping with worries about:

  • low pay or zero hours contracts making it hard to pay rent.
  • how to find extra cash for increasing rent payments.
  • living in poor quality accommodation.
  • having to live in a shared housing because they are receiving less housing benefit than is needed for their own place (under 35s)
  • significant reduction in housing benefit due to the ‘bedroom tax’.

The Love Southampton Housing Group have organised an information and prayer evening as a follow-up to Homelessness Sunday.

This evening is about understanding the problems around homelessness and housing that people in Southampton are facing. And its about seeking God for practical ways to make a positive change.

Join us at 7.30pm on Tuesday 25 March at Central Baptist Church, Devonshire Road, Polygon, SO15 2GY.

Download slides etc to advertise the event here.

Churches come together to serve Southampton

Love Southampton, an initiative of the churches in the city, hosted a successful evening drawing together hundreds of people from across church denominations and Christian projects to pray for the city at the start of 2014.

Love Southampton is a new collaboration project between all the churches in the city, working in partnership with Southampton City Council to find new and innovative ways to serve the city.  Twenty six Christian organisations were represented on the evening, including Southampton Street Pastors and Southampton City Mission.

The event included contributions from across the church denominations including a performance by Covenant Life Ministries Gospel choir.  Their Pastor, Dr John Paul Oddoye explained, ‘Currently Love Southampton has working groups focused on youth provision, hardship, housing, children and families, creative solutions and fostering and adoption’.

The event finished with a pledge from the church communities to find 50 ways to celebrate the City’s Year of Jubilee: marking 50 years of being a city.

Billy Kennedy from the New Community Church, introduced the evening as a time to pray for Southampton: ‘Last year, we saw our unity together as churches grow as we looked to love and serve the people in our city’.

The event included an encouraging message from the Bishop of Southampton, Jonathan Frost:  Love Southampton is for me a joy to be part of. It’s the Christian community turned outwards to the city in partnership, humility, and compassion, seeking the good of everyone’.

Love Southampton will continue to support innovative project in the City such as the Southampton Street Pastors. Mandy Harding from Street Pastors said, ‘we already have 100 people from over 40 different churches in the city serving together as street pastors who have given so far over 24,000 hours on the streets, and  it was brilliant to see how we are coming together in lots of other ways to love and serve Southampton.’

Chris Davis from Southampton City Mission, which provided food through its basics bank more than 8500 times in 2013, said, ‘churches are increasingly becoming known for showing love and kindness to people in need, I am delighted to be a part of this initiative’.

Rev Mgr Vincent Harvey, who supported the evening and guided the assembly through prayer, said, ‘I am delighted to be part of the Council of Reference for Love Southampton and to see us commit together as churches to respond to the needs of the people of  our city in practical ways’.
