Volunteering Roles

Volunteer drivers needed for weekly intergenerational event

“We have regulars who love to attend the events, however we urgently need more volunteer drivers to provide just a little bit of time each week to help get them to and from the gathering.”

Communicare currently has around 300 Communiteers and has launched a campaign to substantially increase this number to be able to support more people through all the services it offers, not just the coffee morning.

Richard Plume, Volunteer at Communicare, said: “I have been a volunteer driver for Communicare for the last two years. This involves driving service users to various medical and social appointments and helping those who need mobility assistance.

DRIVERS with their own cars who can spare 30 minutes to an hour each week are being asked to sign up to transport lonely and isolated people in Southampton (September 2022).

Communicare is looking for helpers to convey isolated and often lonely individuals to a weekly intergenerational CommuniTea event at Weston Adventure Playground.

Annie Clewlow, Manager at Communicare, which helps vulnerable and isolated people in Southampton, said: “We run CommuniTea coffee mornings with The Southampton Children’s Play Association (SCPA) every Thursday during term-time from 10am, which allows often lonely and isolated people to meet other people of all ages and socialise, which is extremely important for them.

“I enjoy giving up my time for volunteering in this way as it is a rewarding experience. Service users appreciate the additional flexibility and assistance, which would not be provided by a conventional taxi service.”

Communicare is now inviting people from all walks of life and of all ages who have a current UK driving licence and their own car to get in touch. Expenses incurred will be reimbursed. It is a friendly, neighbourhood charity, that provides services that enrich the lives of lonely and isolated people in and around Southampton.  Its services are staffed by its devoted volunteers, known as Communiteers, who give their time freely.

The charity is currently supporting around 600 individuals/families through tasks including one-to-one telephone befriending and transport for essential appointments and assistance with shopping.

The services Communicare provides are free to users, although beneficiaries are invited to make a donation if they are able to, and Communiteers are offered expenses.

Become an ‘activity buddy’ and help vulnerable in your area

(Annie Clewlow, Manager at Communicare, which is calling upon Southampton folk to sign up to become ‘activity buddies’ for the charity.)

SOUTHAMPTON folk with some spare time are being called upon to sign up to become ‘activity buddies’ for a charity aiming to eradicate loneliness in the city (October 2022).

Communicare is looking for people to help the lonely and isolated it supports to become more physically active and this could include simply accompanying someone on a walk.

Annie Clewlow, Manager at Communicare, said: “As part of our recruitment drive for volunteers, we’re looking for people who can spare some time to act as a buddy to the individuals we support who are lonely and/or isolated through a mobility difficulty, learning or physical disability, mental health issues or challenging social circumstances and help them to access opportunities to become more physically active.

“The hours are flexible, allowing volunteers to help with regular activities or ‘one-off’ opportunities when available. Volunteers can select the types of tasks that they are willing to undertake, and these could include providing transport to and from activities, including waiting for the service user while they take part or, in some circumstances, it may be appropriate to join in with the activity alongside the service user.

“We’re also looking for volunteers to travel with groups of service users on a ‘chartered’ minibus to provide support and aid the smooth running of trips, to travel on public transport with a service user or small group of service users to give them confidence in making the journey, accompanying service users on a walk in their local area or attending an activity alongside a service user.

“Any volunteers offering transport would need to have their own car, which must be fully insured. We’re keen to hear from individuals who can help, even if they have just an afternoon here and there to spare.

“Volunteering is such a worthwhile and rewarding thing to do and anyone interested should get in touch by calling us on 023 8250 0050. We can even offer a video conference chat.

ADVERT FOR AMBER VOLUNTEER CLUB CHAPLAIN

Who are we?

Come and join our very friendly team providing a Christian chaplaincy service for women involved in the sex industry in Southampton.  Our aim is to support women in our city who are working in all areas of the sex industry, through a non-judgmental and confidential listening service. We rely on volunteers who are confident to bring their skills into a very diverse and distinct environment. We aim to offer support to women through being present in a variety of contexts - on the streets, in massage parlours, online and in lap-dancing clubs.

About this voluntary role

We are looking specifically for volunteer club chaplains who are Christian females aged 18 and above, who can give a few hours every fortnight to help grow our work in lap-dancing clubs. This role would involve going into the city’s 3 lap-dancing clubs and building authentic relationships with the performers, listening to them and offering prayer. We are specifically looking for females who can be available late at night (between 21:00 and 23:30) on either a Tuesday or Friday evening and who share our Christian faith and values.  No previous experience is necessary as training and support will be provided. (please see our volunteer club chaplain role description here for more information).

How to apply?

In the first instance contact Ruth on ruth@amberchaplains.org.uk or 07752 198 434.  We are committed to building a culture of safeguarding and to promote the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk. We actively promote the positive value of diversity and are committed to equality and eliminating discrimination, wherever possible.  If you are suitable, we will encourage you to apply using our online application form and we will collect 2 references.  We will ensure you understand the role you are being asked to fulfil and are supported by a staff chaplain. You would be making a positive difference in women's lives. We are excited to meet you!
